Overview:

This is a story of an American GI Sergeant stationed on the Island of Jamaica in the British West Indies during world War II. One Day he sees a little girl in tatters selling mangoes on the outskirts of the shantytown across from the Army Base. He learns that she lives with her Granny in a little hut and that her mother, a former nightclub singer, is confined to a leprosarium in a time when victims of leprosy were treated as prisoners. The Sergeant enlisted the services of an American missionary nun stationed in the leprosarium and a Jesuit missionary who serves as the Army Chaplin, to bring about a reunion between mother and child. The author vividly describes life in Jamaica during the 1940's when it was considered the "Jewel of the Caribbean". Based on true facts, the author paints a portrait of the island in sunshine and shadow. The story is filled with pathos, intrigue and laughter.
